Antique Peking, China, early twentieth century – A t times antique Peking carpets like this illustrate the modernist design principle that less is more. Here the composition consists only of a series of pale gold dragons flanking astral symbols, that collectively approximate a border encircling and open dark navy field. The apparent simplicity allows us to focus on the delicate detail of the dragons, while the openness gives the rug an adaptable decorative quality well suited to a range of styles and tastes. The simplicity also allows us to focus on the lush quality of the thick velvety wool pile as well as the dark, dramatic depth of its color.
