Antique East Turkestan Khotan Rug, Country of Origin: East Turkestan, Circa Date: 1880– This antique rug from East Turkestan features two large tigers spilled over the central field, stitched in a stylized fashion from dark blue and brown over a solid light brown backdrop. Small circles detail the paw pads, two curling ears extend from each head and a maze of black creates the illusion of stripes over the bodies. These forms are accompanied by smaller figures of people and birds watching the bodies of the large cats. Bold dark brown designs similar to the striping on the tigers fills each corner of this Khotan rug. A few borders contain the central scene, embellished with clouds, stripes and spiraling square patterns.
