Date : 1219) – This magnificent antique gallery size rug masterpiece, dated 1804, is a rare find. It has a sublime quality that shows an extraordinary level of skill and mastery. The long and narrow antique tribal rug is signed “Amaleh Kokab Khanom 1219” which translates “Woven by Mrs. Kokab. Date: 1219.” The fact that it is a signed piece is only one of the features that makes this Malayer a special piece.

Antique Persian Malayer rugs were produced in one of over 100 villages scattered throughout the region. They are known for their variety of colors and patterns. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Malayer rugs were almost exclusively smaller rugs and runners. They were often woven by individual Persian rug weavers. The Persian rugs the size of this one were usually woven by families and were typically only done on commission. Mrs. Kokab might have been the primary designer and overseer for the production of this rug because weaving a rug of this size would take a single person several years to accomplish.

The inclusion of animals also makes this antique rug stand out. This rug has both the features of a city carpet and those of a village carpet. The design appears to have been carried out using a formal pattern that was flipped vertically halfway through the piece. It shows the careful planning and symmetry of a formal carpet, but in some places, it does not show the precision that you would expect to see from a carpet produced in a formal weaving school. This only adds to the mystery of the origins of this carpet.

Regardless of the beginnings of this antique rug, we do know that Mrs. Kokab was a talented weaver and had an eye for color and detail. This is a gorgeous piece, and the animals only add to the charm and character of the piece. This rug would make an excellent addition to a collection or as a formal piece for any room of the home. It has a refined character, but its tribal roots also come through in the design. This antique Persian Senneh weave rug is as fascinating as it is breathtaking.
