What Makes a Rug Important?

This is perhaps the most difficult quality to ascertain in a rug, and it is one that collectors must learn to address as quickly as possible. A rug may be important on various levels. Iy may be an outstanding example of its type in terms of the quality of its drawing and color. Or it may be an exceptionally rare example of its type. Unusual rugs, by virtue of their rarity, may potentially be important pieces, particularly if they appear to be seminal or transitional works within the larger development. Collectors should strive to acquire rugs that are important, or important to some degree.
