Vintage Swedish Kilim by Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd, Country of Origin: Sweden, Circa date: Mid-20th Century – Designed and constructed during the height of Sweden’s mid-century handcraft revival, this ingenious Scandinavian vintage rug by Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd, features a clever pattern of modular tiles that trick the eye. The strong composition relies on a series of three modular lozenge motifs that are carefully repositioned to create a phenomenal modernist pattern that can be viewed in a number of ways. Double pillars with infinite rapport and perfect odd-even juxtaposition enhance the geometric composition and provide a sense of symmetry that balances the opposing small-scale accent pieces, which give the tiles a lilting sense of movement. Like a paradoxical ladder, the graphic diagonal motifs form alternating planes that spill downward and travel upward simultaneously. The mind-bending interplay of the simple shapes, textures and low-contrast colors is amplified by the stepped right-angle contours, which have an innovative illusion of smoothness.
