Designed by the legendary Barbro Nilsson, this vintage Scandinavian carpet features a whimsical, textural pattern of tiled stars rendered in rich maritime colors.
Vintage Stjarnflossa Bla Design Scandinavian Rug by Barbro Nilsson for Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom, Origin: Sweden, Circa: Mid 20th Century – This mid-century Scandinavian vintage rug depicts a stunning pattern of tiled geometric stars accompanied by textural accents and modern ornaments. Best known as the artistic director of the Marta Maas Fjetterstrom workshop, Barbro Nilsson was a master of textile design, pattern and color. This evocative square carpet blends mod geometry with whimsical motifs and saturated maritime colors inspired by Nilsson’s seaside home. The precise patchwork-style tiles cleverly share adjacent pieces to form a perfectly symmetric repeating pattern. Colorful mid-century roundels and secondary eight-pointed stars appear in the central compartment and become a focus in the complementary borders. Subtle striped and stippled background segments in varying jewel-tone colors give this harmonious Scandinavian carpet exquisite texture and detail.
As a young weaving student in Stockholm’s famous art academies, Nilsson’s work was highly acclaimed. This recognition led to her teaching at the prestigious Konstfack, also known as the University College of Arts Crafts and Design, where she directed the textiles department from 1947 through 1957.
It was around this same time that Nilsson was selected by Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom to replace her as the firm’s creative leader. While Fjetterstrom was instrumental in developing a grassroots handcraft revival, Nilsson guided the firm through its most successful years from 1942 through 1970 when mid-century modern trends gripped the international design world. A number of the most iconic designs ever created by the Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom atelier are attributed to Nilsson, and her impact on Scandinavian style is undeniable.
This particular vintage Barbro Nilsson Stjarnflossa Bla carpet looks truly modern. With a soft, classic intertwined palette of blues, purples and speckles of cream, this Swedish rug exudes an air of soothing tranquility. A rhythmic geometric pattern defines the rug, while candy-striped inner borders and thicker, blue and white striped outer borders give the simple composition an added layer of interest.
