Fantastically colored and boldly decorated, this delightful antique Kurdish rug makes a grand statement with its formal medallion and eclectic village style.

Antique Persian Kurdish Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – Modeled after Persia’s formal city carpets, this sophisticated antique Kurdish rug from Persia has a worldly visage that incorporates formal influences and rustic traditions. The beautifully abrashed desert-colored field showcases a mossy green medallion that is flanked by grand pendants and decorated with a whimsical arabesque. The verdant spandrels are defined by their flattering curves, poly chromatic outlines and angular floral motifs.

In the ornate borders, the Kurdish tribal style takes precedence. Multiple sets of crenellated borders rendered in contrasting colors surround the narrow main borders, which feature a charming pattern of reciprocating flowers and vine scrolls that are drawn in a rustic manner. This splendid example of Kurdish weaving artistry has an unassuming style that effortlessly incorporates a variety of regional and cultural influences.
