Antique Persian Bakshaish Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: Late 19th Century – Here is a captivating and truly beautiful antique rug – an antique Persian Bakshaish carpet that was woven in Persia during the waning years of the nineteenth century. Among the more compelling styles of antique Persian rugs and carpets, the Bakshaish style is renowned for its unique aesthetic, which incorporates design trends from tribal and village rugs, cleans them up, and then presents them on a large and refined scale. This particular example beautifully communicates these trends, and does so in a mesmerizing pallet of brown, ivory, and blue. The complex series of borders sets the stage for this composition: here, a pair of inner borders and outer borders surround a thicker primary border of dazzling blue. This band is populated with exciting geometric detail elements that stand out beautifully. This compositional flourish is carried on throughout the field, which, outside of the corner pieces and central medallion, is a static shade of brown. The line work and colors in the medallions and corner pieces, however, is more than sufficient to infuse this carpet with a deep and lingering energy.
