Dragon medallions and stepped lozenges are combined with animals, weighted latch hooks and ancient symbols in this striking antique Caucasian rug from Shirvan.

Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug, Caucasus, Circa 1900 – Bold dragon medallions supplemented with a variety of auspicious protection symbols decorate the saturated midnight blue field of this elegant antique rug from Shirvan. The central stacked lozenge medallion is flanked by smaller medallions, checkerboard symbols and geometric animals. Divided squares, poly chromatic goz symbols and weighted latch hooks embellish the edges of each dragon motif. Powerful and benevolent, dragons are said to guard the Tree of Life and produce fertile rains as the master of air and water. These stylized depictions of the mythical dragon are paired with a variety of auspicious protection symbols rendered in a regionally prominent combination of vermilion, ecru, white and saturated blue. Main borders featuring an archetypal serrated leaf and wine cup pattern enclose the field along with multiple sets of decorative guard bands embellished with segmented rosettes.
