Antique Persian Tribal Kurdish Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: Late 19th Century – This antique tribal rug is at once comfortable and complex. The geometry woven into this antique Persian Kurdish rug is apparent at a glance through prominent motifs, but further consideration reveals much more substance. From the perimeter, it is ringed by two large borders within a series of thinner guard stripes of brown, pink and blue. The outermost primary stripe features an undulating running water motif of pastel blue and pink over ivory on three sides and similarly shaded hexagon circumscribed floral designs along the foot. Exploring inward, an adjacent pink stripe of equal width is adorned with a sequence of Memling guls gently shaded in cream, brown, blue, rose and mossy green. The ivory shaded central field displays a large medallion bracketed by prominent chevrons above and below that focus the inner composition and define each corner’s quarter panels. The fertile floral centerpiece radiates pink, beige and brown tendrils from its cream and rose colored petals, and the corners are artfully populated with diamonds, additional blooms and stylized animals. The dark brown angles that divide the core are flanked by thin pink and blue stripes and filled with delicate quartered diamonds. At the apex of each chevron, a prominent Memling gul crowns the central display. Like a Kurdish herdsman’s pasture, this artwork is home to elemental beauty.
