Modern Persian Sultanabad Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: Late 20th Century – Here is an impressive and beautifully woven modern carpet – a contemporary rug woven in the Sultanabad style in Persia (present day Iran) during the waning years of the twentieth century. The Sultanabad tradition in which this carpet is woven is one of the most intriguing and most perennially popular styles of antique Oriental rugs and carpets. This modern example is an interesting example of the style, emphasizing certain typical characteristics while downplaying others. Created in Sultanabad, this contemporary Persian rug from Iran features a beautiful combination of grand cloud band medallions surrounded by small-scale floral motifs that highlight the vigorously abrashed field. Flame-like palmettes, sharply serrated saz leaves, torchiere-shaped blossoms and dainty floral motifs enhanced with contrasting outlines decorate the strongly abrashed field, which features a subtle combination of ivory and ecru with olive green undertones. The elegantly composed field is enclosed by formal borders decorated with reciprocating floral motifs linked by arching floral sprays that incorporate a stunning range of vibrant colors, including flaxen yellow, brick red, ivory and emerald green.
