Oushak Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – This richly decorative antique Oushak rug has a powerful allover design of staggered terracotta and ivory medallions repeating across a warm, sandy ground. Though large and closely spaced, the medallions are rendered as crisply geometric openwork forms, allowing the ground to show through, and imparting a more spacious quality to the entire composition. The delicate border of rosettes nicely contrasts the larger scale of the field design, but retaining the same coloration for balance and overall unity.
