Vintage Round Chinese Art Deco Rug, Origin: China, Circa: First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is a dynamic and exciting antique area rug – an antique Art Deco rug that was woven in China during the early part of the twentieth century. Featuring archetypal Art Deco flourishes, from its round shape to the undulating line work of its borders, this antique Chinese carpet offers a delightful glance into an emerging modernism. Positioned at regular intervals, a series of blue shapes emerge from the very edge of the carpet. Four such shapes appear, and it is outward from these that the waving lines of the border are positioned. Indeed, the entire border may be approached as a conversation between these blue shapes, and the more triangular blue shapes that emerge from the carpet’s inner border, as it is between these two areas of blue that the line work traverses. Within, a pleasingly undercoated expanse of ivory serves as the field of this Art Deco design rug. This is bordered by a lovely light blue scroll, which separates the field from the borders. At the very center of this round carpet is a round medallion: a traditional Chinese symbol, featuring a tight tangle of lines, rectilinear but arranged in a circle, which beautifully ties together the entire piece. A lovely and exciting work, this antique Art Deco Chinese rug is an excellent example.
