Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug, Caucasus, Late 19th Century – This charming antique rug from the Caucasus features an unusually shaped field seen in many Kazak prayer rugs. The irregular field features a traditional recessed mihrab and elongated compartments that extend like legs. Humanoid figures built using berekets, elibelinde motifs and ancient symbols with clear white accents, Persian blue details and cool blue-green motifs offset the bold carmine red field. Colorful ram’s horn motifs and a divided-lozenge goz symbol rendered in crimson, clear white, blue and soft yellow decorate the central medallion. Serrated main borders feature poly chromatic leaves that unfold into an interesting counter change pattern, which is an archetypal example of the versatile, angular motifs and striking clear colors that have been used in the Caucasus for thousands of years.
