Created circa 1880, this antique Sultanabad sampler or wagireh features a meandering arabesque with well-defined botanical elements that typify the regional style.

Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – This exceptional antique sampler from Sultanabad depicts a partial arabesque with meandering vinescrolls, well-defined botanical motifs and crisp outlines rendered in contrasting colors. Created circa 1880, this delicate and beautifully detailed wagireh features minor running-water borders with zigzagging contours and a warm mahogany field with brick red undertones. Unfurling Saz leaves with recurved leaflets, pale ivory vinescrolls and grand Shah Abbasi palmettes with individual petals make a bold visual statement. Soft neutrals and earth-tone details are juxtaposed against beautiful sapphire blues and teal gem-tone accents that are set over the warm mahogany background. In the traditional Sultanabad style, this superb antique sampler features strong outlines rendered in contrasting colors that emphasize the well-defined edges of each rosette, petal and ladyfinger leaflet.
