Antique Turkish Rugs — Large Antique Turkish Oushak Rug, Origin: Turkey, date: late nineteenth century – The design of this magnificent antique Turkish Oushak rug preserves the local Turkish rug weaving tradition of the open field classical large antique Turkish Oushak rugs of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. However, this heritage has been transformed by a village sensibility apparent in the strongly abstract, reductive geometric drawing of the plant or vine forms, endowing the piece with the same attractive boldness of a great Bakshaish or Serapi. The overall effect is enhanced by the lovely palette of varied greens and reds. This example attests to the skill of the Oushak rug weavers in adapting small-format precedent to large-scale decorative carpet design.
