Antique Persian Bakhtiari Rug, Circa – Early 20th Century — The majority of antique Persian Bakhtiari rugs were created in Chahar Mahal, to the east of the Zagros range, near the Persian Gulf. The Bakhtiari were a nomadic tribe, and their name became associated with the extravagant carpet weaving of the region. This antique rug is a striking example, woven with a generous application of deep red that contrasts boldly with the dark outlines. At the base is a rectangular medallion, which is adorned with abstracted fish and birds. From atop this medallion, a tree grows organically into blossoming branches that fill the composition. The innovative design is geometric, with angular and block images. Two eye-catching peacocks and stylized trees rest at the bottom of the tree, and other birds are perched whimsically on the vines. Grape clusters also embellish the pastoral scene. The border of this Bakhtiari rug frames the picture with more floral motifs, executed in vibrant and cheerful colors.
