Rustic Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – A striking allover Sickle Leaf and ‘Herati’ pattern of vines and palmettes in shades of soft blue, sage green, and ivory unfolds dynamically across the soft terracotta ground of this incomparably beautiful antique Persian Sultanabad. The scale of the vines alternates in horizontal rows, emphasizing the curling ‘sickle-palmettes’ that are a hallmark of the earliest antique Persian carpets with this design. The interlacing vine scroll or ‘turtle’ border contrasts with the monumental proportions of the field, while its soft blue ground provides a contrasting framing effect for the field. The controlled sweep and sureness of the drawing of this carpet is simply exceptional, even among the best Sultanabads.
