Antique Caucasian Rugs — Antique Zakatala carpet, late nineteenth century – Among Caucasian rugs antique Zakatalas are prized for their powerful, energetic drawing and graphic coloration, perhaps even more than Kazaks, as this spectacular example clearly shows. A series of small medallions and angular paisley forms in red, blue, green, and sandy gold floats across the rich chocolate ground, undoubtedly made from natural, un-dyed wool. Their spacing is irregular and free, imparting excitement to the design alongside the bold color effects. A variant of the so-called ‘dragon’ border provides a lively finish with its alternating colors against a rich red ground. A masterpiece of authentic village weaving.
