Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – With an open medallion design more characteristic of Senneh or Malayer carpets, this stately antique Sultanabad is quite distinctive and outstanding. A grand diamond medallion sprouts finials nearly as large, all set against an open, deep navy field whose hexagonal form is defined by triangular cornerpieces. The main ivory-ground border of amphorae sprouting flowers is simply incomparable. Additional minor borders of running vine scrolls supply an extra supporting touch. The blend of soft reds, blues, and ivory imparts a delicate warmth, nicely balancing the cool, crisp quality of the design.
