Red Antique Turkish Oushak Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1900 Some of the finest Oriental antique rugs originated in Western Turkey during the latter years of the Ottoman Empire, and this alluring Oushak carpet uniquely represents this tradition with a theme that is simultaneously basic and intricate. The outer border includes three strata; each featuring varied rosettes and delicate floral devices dominated by rich gold and ochre tones. The primary border is an arboreal delight of outwardly radiating cypress and tree of life motifs rooted in a soft blue inner border adorned with contrasting rosettes. The central field does not detract from the botanical perimeter and is devoid of any geometric devices. Its luxuriant texture and radiant red color form the good earth anchoring the woven world around it. This effect is compelling and draws the eye from elegant simplicity outward to the sublime through the heavenward reaching boughs of a hopeful forest.
