Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – Vertical columns of vines, tree-like shrubs spread in staggered array across the soft green field of this boldly elegant antique Sultanabad. The coloration of these forms – using a dominant ivory for the vines and terracotta, apricot, saffron and blue for the flowers – appears especially lovely against the variegated shades of green. The border of star cartouches and tiny vines on a terracotta ground provides a framing contrast in scale with the monumental design of the field, although using the same range of colors to achieve a larger harmony.
