Vintage Swedish Kilim, Origin: Sweden, Circa: Mid- 20th Century – This vintage rug is a pleasing combination of traditional Scandinavian weaving and modern geometric elements. Traditional Swedish kilim rugs were woven in natural hues and solid colors to create tapestry-like pieces that were largely utilitarian. As the style matured, floral motifs and geometric elements like lines, zigzags and checks were incorporated for interest. These flat-weave rugs are used today to complement modern interiors ranging from Art Deco to minimalist decor.
Here, a soft hue of moss green sets the tone for this 8-by-12-foot rug. The weaver has used two colors, moss green and white, for warp and weft threads to produce the subtle tones of the field of the rug. Precisely executed white horizontal lines define 12 bands that contain tiny checkerboards of white and green set against a white background. The white serves as contrast to accentuate the dark moss green line that divides each band in half. The flat weave accentuates the simplicity of the design. The ends are finished in a solid dark moss green tone.
