Large Warm-Tone Antique Persian Mahal Allover Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1920

Thousands of small repeating motifs spread almost uninterrupted across the red field of this antique Persian Mahal rug, giving the surface a dense, finely textured appearance from edge to edge. Rather than concentrating attention on a medallion, the pattern relies on repetition and continuity, making the rug a particularly clear example of an allover rug composition.

Warm reds, brick tones and muted coral dominate the field, while small accents of blue, ivory, green and dark brown articulate the individual forms within the repeat. The motifs are compact enough that they merge into an almost continuous ornamental texture from a distance, yet closer viewing reveals numerous tiny floral and angular details arranged with remarkable consistency. This balance between saturated color and minute pattern gives the rug a richness that does not depend on a single oversized focal element.

The broad border creates the strongest change in color. A deep navy ground surrounds the warmer center with a procession of larger blossoms, leaf-like forms and scrolling stems in rust, gold, ivory and blue. Because the border motifs are substantially larger than those filling the field, the perimeter reads clearly even against the extraordinary density of the interior pattern. Narrower guard bands add further layers of ornament while maintaining the strong rectangular framework.

The visual effect is fundamentally one of accumulation: countless small elements build a unified red field, while the dark border contains and sharpens that abundance. Its brick, rust and deep red coloration also places the rug naturally among Nazmiyal’s warm tone rugs, while the repeating botanical details connect it with the broader tradition of floral rugs.
