Large Striking Antique Persian Heriz Geometric Medallion Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1920
Bold geometry establishes the character of this antique Persian Heriz rug almost immediately. An elongated red central medallion stretches along the vertical axis, its stepped silhouette enclosing a complex interior of ivory, navy, coral and muted blue. Strong angular contours give the centerpiece an architectural presence, while pointed extensions at either end draw the composition outward through the length of the field.
Inside the medallion, successive layers of geometric ornament create a striking progression from the pale central core to darker navy compartments and the surrounding red ground. Smaller diamond-shaped forms repeat above and below, reinforcing the strong vertical rhythm. Around them, sharply articulated leaves, branching stems and angular botanical devices fill the available space without softening the fundamental geometry of the design.
The ivory corner areas provide essential contrast to the saturated red center. Their lighter ground makes the surrounding blue, coral and green details especially clear, while the broad red border returns the dominant color to the perimeter. Large rosettes, angular vines and repeating floral motifs circulate around this outer band, framed by narrower guard borders that give the composition a tightly finished edge.
What makes the rug especially effective is the tension between its monumental central shape and the abundance of smaller details around it. From a distance, the red medallion and ivory corners create a forceful geometric structure; closer inspection reveals a much denser network of blossoms, leaves and articulated secondary motifs in blue, cream, coral and green.
