Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – While descended from the refined palemtte tendril designs of classical Persian carpets, this antique Sultanabad has the bold graphic drawing and exuberant freedom of a village rug, like the best Bakshaishes and Serapis. A grand array of palmettes in soft reds, blues, and pale apricot spreads rhythmically across the soft cream ground, linked by arced red vines and thin stems. A dense red ground border of cartouche medallions provides a contrast of color and design against the light openness of the field.
