Gorgeous Densely Patterned Antique Persian Kerman Floral Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1920
So thoroughly covered with ornament is the dark field of this antique Persian Kerman rug that the near-black navy ground often appears only in the narrow spaces between flowers. Rose, coral, apricot, pale blue, cream and violet blossoms gather into tightly packed sprays, rounded clusters and curling forms, producing a richly saturated floral design with very little inactive space.
At the center, concentric rings of blossoms form a circular medallion, but it does not sit apart from the surrounding pattern. Instead, the centerpiece merges into a symmetrical vertical arrangement of flowering branches, dense rosettes and larger curling motifs. The transition is so continuous that the central form becomes part of the same abundant floral system rather than an isolated emblem placed on an open ground.
That dark interior is enclosed by a dramatically different perimeter. A broad red border carries tightly organized floral ornament and repeating scalloped forms, with pale blue guard bands establishing a crisp division between the two principal color zones. A narrow dark outer edge then echoes the navy field, visually enclosing the brighter red framework.
The contrast between the almost saturated floral field and the clearly articulated border gives the rug two levels of visual reading. From farther away, the dark center and vivid red perimeter dominate; closer inspection reveals countless small blossoms, leaves and curling stems arranged within that larger structure. The result is a Kerman design whose impact comes as much from the sheer concentration of ornament as from its dramatic palette.
