This marvelously diverse antique Turkish prayer rug features an outstanding variety of ancient Anatolian symbols arranged in a purposeful manner. Sacbagi hair bands, which are an important wedding symbol, and pyramidal amulets filled with triangular tiles provide protection from the evil eye. Urn-like amulets with ram’s horn extensions, multiple sets of finger motifs and ram’s horns set inside angular polygons are combined to create a complex series of counter change borders incorporating cocoa brown, ivory and maize yellow accents. Peachy coral-red details with barbed latch hook appendages are boldly contrasted by the striking Prussian blue field they surround. This flat-woven kilim features subtle steps and smooth lines created solely with right-angle shapes that add to the intensity and intrigue of each geometric symbol that decorates the field and the angular lozenge-shaped prayer niche.
