Finely Woven Beautiful Oversized Antique Persian Kerman Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900 – Kerman is a city that has been known for producing carpets for the palaces and homes of kings and nobleman for several centuries. This Kerman carpet was created around the turn of the 20th century and reflects the artistry that allowed the Persian carpet weavers to rise to become keys to economic success not only once, but twice in their history.

This carpet is not only beautiful for its use of color and elegant design, the artist was inspired the designs of the royal court weavers of the Safavid Dynasty. During the 1500s, the Safavid rulers sponsored the development of carpet weaving and established formal schools to train designers and weavers. It was during this time that many of the familiar motifs and design styles developed. During the 1890s, there was an effort to revive the Persian carpet industry and return it to its glory.

This carpet was produced during the revival period, but the artist used a design that could just as easily be from the first rise to fame hundreds of years earlier. The colors chosen have the royal character and high contrast familiar in carpets that are centuries older than this one. The sweeping sickle leaves and vines create motion and give it a formal feel.

The midnight blue background of the border creates a rich, royal feel against the saffron background of the field. The artist transposed the colors in the borders and the field to create unity and harmony throughout the design. The placement of the design elements and the space used by the field and borders reflects the style of the early Safavid Dynasty carpets.

This is a breathtaking antique rug that reflects a high level of training and skill on the part of the designer. It has a high knot count, which is required to produce a design of this detail. A piece of this size was more than likely created as a commissioned piece. It is one of those carpets that seems to transcend time and space, reflecting the Golden Age of Persian art. This piece was created by a talented artist and has an almost sublime quality. This carpet takes your breath away when you first see it, and it would make the perfect piece for a formal room design.
