Antique Kerman woven by Master Aboul Ghasem Kermani, Persia, Late 19th Century – On this elegant antique Kerman prayer rug, made by the ‘master of masters,’ Aboul Ghasem Kermani, a graceful tree of life climbs gently heavenward, its branches filled with flowers, fruit, and exotic feeding birds, while a snaky dragon slithers up the trunk. An ornamental arch or mihrab with flowering spandrels crowns the composition. A design of trees and flowering branches filled with birds makes up the borders, nicely continuing the imagery of the field. The gentle, warm palette with earth tones complemented by soft shades of green and red sets off the delicacy of the design to great effect.
