Antique Chinese Rug, Origin: China, Circa: 1920 – This opulent antique area rug from China embodies the refined style of Eastern art and design. The sophisticated composition features ample negative space, luxurious monochromatic tones and evocative iconography that has a charming superficial appearance with esoteric undertones. The lush camel-tone field showcases a diminutive pagoda medallion enclosed by flowing cloud-bands that have sensuous curves. Isolated bouquet clusters float over the soft ground and support the symmetric form of the creative medallion and complementary spandrels. Towering pagodas adorned with decorative lanterns and architectural features are tucked into rocky groves that become naturalistic spandrels. Scrolling fretwork accents and precisely drawn endless knots meander around the perimeter of the field and support the highly decorative main borders. Traditional shou motifs and alternating treasures conclude the superlative composition, which features a host of traditional Chinese symbols.
