Charming Antique Turkish Oushak Tree of Life Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1900
The ground is a soft khaki, pale enough that everything set on it reads clearly. A single tree fills the lower half — one trunk, branches rising in pairs, leaves squared off and serrated in apricot, coral and dark brown. Above the crown the field opens into scattered flowerheads, small sprays and slender cream columns.
The same weeping willow is drawn twice and coloured differently each time: once in gold, low and to the left, once in dark brown higher up. Nothing is rounded — every leaf and blossom is cut from straight steps, which is the geometric habit the weaving is known for. The border works at a larger scale, an apricot ground carrying dove-grey palmettes that alternate with paired leaf figures.
At 6 ft 4 in by 9 ft 10 in it falls in the 6 x 9 size range, right for a seating group or a smaller dining room. The design can also be rewoven to your dimensions as a custom rug.
