Antique Persian Afshar Rug, Persia, Early 20th Century – Created by Afshar weavers, this splendid antique Persian rug showcases a grand crimson medallion surrounded by inconspicuous protection symbols and delicate botanical motifs. This richly detailed example of Afshar weavings adds a beautiful variety of symbolic figures to a traditional medallion composition with ornate pendants and mirror-image spandrels. The dark coal-colored field is decorated with constellation floral motifs, geometric people and complex symbolic figures. Each isolated motif is carefully outlined in bright, clear colors that are offset by the somber coal-colored ground. Bright ivory borders decorated with reciprocating vine scrolls and angular floral motifs create the perfect counterpoint to the strongly colored field. This archetypal Afshar rug incorporates formal elements, saturated colors and mysterious symbols that have a unique style.
