Art Nouveau Design Antique Chinese Rug, China, c. 1910’s – Here is a charming antique Oriental rug – an antique Art Nouveau piece, woven in China during the first decade of the twentieth century. This attractive antique rug is characterized primarily by an unorthodox treatment of color, and also by its beautifully wrought monumental medallion of graceful spring flowers. Working from the outside in, this antique Art Nouveau work features a deep charcoal border that is practically black: especially so since the remainder of the composition consists primarily of soft and pastel tones. Encircled by flowing flowers that separate the black of the border, the field is largely unadorned, interrupted only by occasional appearances from the floral frame. At the center of the composition is the medallion, trimmed with a vibrant purple and positively resplendent with beautifully composed flowers of convincing pinks, whites, purples and mored. A beautiful Art Nouveau rug, this Chinese composition is a testament to the enduring beauty of the style.
