Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Early 20th Century – An imposing array of lush palmettes and sinuous vines in warm reds, apricot, soft blues, and gold pulsates across the rich navy field of this magnificent antique Sultanabad. The design structured about a central vertical column or candelabra that stands out amidst a larger viney network or trellis, with smaller vine sprays filling the remaining ground area. In the main border a more finely scaled staggered vinescroll design is set against an apricot ground for contrast to the monumentality of the field, while additional minor borders of diminutive vinescrolls reinforce the framing function of the main one.
