Tribal Caucasian Antique Shirvan Rug, Southeast Caucasus, late nineteenth century – A honeycomb network of fine serrated leaves containing tiny stylized shrubs and blossoms in reds and blues spreads with fine precision across the cool ivory ground on this classic antique Shirvan. Various minor borders of triangles, figure eights, and zig-zag stripes expand out from the filed, enclosed finally by a ‘dragon’ border in soft blue. Shirvans like this are the most finely drawn and tightly woven of antique Caucasian rugs. The lustrous wool nicely complements the delicacy of the color and draftsmanship.
