Beautiful Antique Tribal Persian Qashqai Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900
Three dark medallions punctuate the vertical axis of this antique Persian Qashqai rug, creating a strong rhythm through an otherwise predominantly red composition. Each is surrounded by stepped outlines and angular extensions in ivory, blue, black and muted green, while the larger rust-red field is packed with smaller animals, blossoms and compact geometric devices. The combination of bold central forms and freely distributed secondary motifs gives the design the direct, highly graphic character associated with tribal rugs.
The surrounding structure is unusually elaborate. Serrated contours define the elongated central field, while narrow ivory-striped panels fill the spaces along its sides and triangular areas at either end. Their repeated diagonal markings create a crisp counterpoint to the more varied drawing within the red ground. Throughout the rug, diamonds, hooked forms and angular botanical elements reinforce the strongly geometric design without forcing the smaller motifs into a perfectly uniform repeat.
Multiple borders build outward from the field in alternating bands of deep blue, red, ivory and brown. Some are filled with compact floral devices, while others rely on small repeating geometric units; at the upper and lower edges, broad chevron bands introduce an especially bold sequence of red, blue, ivory and dark brown zigzags. These changes in scale keep the perimeter visually active while clearly containing the more complex interior.
The rug can therefore be read at several levels: first as a sequence of dark medallions against a saturated red field, then as a dense collection of small geometric, botanical and animal-like forms, and finally as a series of increasingly narrow patterned frames.
