Antique Tribal Persian Heriz Runner Rug, Country Of Origin: Persia, Circa DAte: Late 19th Century – Antique Heriz carpets in a runner format like this one are unusual. But here the relatively simple composition of finely stepped medallions is truly exceptional, relating to Caucasian and North Persian rug weaving, rather than the classical repertoire underlying Heriz room-sized carpets. The stepped elements within the medallions are perhaps derived from North Persian flat-woven kilims, while the ‘Boteh’ vine-scroll border derives as well from Northwest Persian Serapi Heriz village rugs. Only the small branches with flowers between the medallions relate to Heriz designs, as does the magnificent sense of color. The impressive skill and taste of the weaver emerges most in the absolute harmony and unity in which these diverse influences come together here to produce an outstanding decorative rug.
