Antique Shirvan Rug, Caucasus, Late 19th Century – This vibrant antique Caucasian Shirvan carpet features a recessed mihrab decorated with combs, hooks and ancient symbolic figures. Inner borders featuring contrasting bereket symbols woven in a combination of blue, yellow, white and Kohl black enclose the field along with secondary outer borders decorated with segmented flowers. Tightly spaced dragon motifs with extended hooks decorate the field creating a secondary pattern of white latch hook chains hidden in the negative space between each motif. Turreted edges and minor guard bands decorated with a series of colorful diagonal stripes add to the traditional Caucasian appearance of this symbolic antique rug woven in Shirvan during the late 19th century.
