Created in the Caucasus, this antique Kazak rug features an outstanding dragon medallion surrounded by rows of reciprocating latch hooks with articulated outlines.

Antique Kazak Rug, Origin: Caucasus, Circa: Late 19th century – Boldly colored and intricately decorated, this tribal antique Caucasian Kazak rug creatively uses a limited number of modular motifs to create a stacked lozenge medallion, formal borders and complementary emblems that embellish the composition. Interlocking latch hook details create an impressive counter change pattern using contrasting colors while minute protection symbols decorate the vividly colored field.

Crenellated fence outer borders rendered in a striking combination of sapphire blue and vermilion enclose the field along with main borders that are decorated with continuing variations of the reciprocal latch hook motifs. Clear, crisp white details surrounded by contrasting outlines are paired with saturated hues of sapphire blue, vermilion and teal. Barber-pole guard bands separate the field and main borders adding another layer of tribal flair to this archetypal Kazak antique rug.
