A Remarkable Tribal Design Long and Narrow Size Blue Background Color Antique Khotan Carpet, Country of Origin: East Turkestan, Circa Date: 1920 — Borrowing elements from Western neighbors and the illustrious empires of the Far East, this exemplary antique Khotan carpet is a wonderful example of East Turkestan unique style and varied influences. Minimalist colors and designs with sharp fretwork decorations hearken back to the Far East while stepped lozenges and angular medallion figures have a tribal style reminiscent of Caucasian and Turkoman creations. Stormy blue-gray and ivory are juxtaposed in the chic, artfully reserved field, which features a complex stacked medallion with alternating lozenge figures. Like carpets from the West, small-scale serrated stars, divided lozenges and branching leaflets fill the space surrounding each decorative symbol-filled lozenge. The Western-influenced field is enclosed by strong borders featuring reciprocating lotus blossoms with serrated petals and fretwork outer borders featuring ram’s horn motifs and complex pinyin wan figures that display clear Eastern influences.
