Magnificent Antique Red Color Round French Art Deco Rug by Leleu, Country of Origin / Rug Type: French Rug, Circa Date: 1920 – This striking antique round rug is by the famous French furniture designer Jules Leleu. He lived in France and produced work from the late 1800’s through the 1920’s. His most famous works represented Art Deco influences and were produced in the 1920’s, as with this example. Many of his works were created to go with furniture creations that represented an entire room set. He would design every piece to work together. They were meant to be displayed as a unit to create a certain room style, rather than sold as individual pieces.

This antique French Art Deco rug is unusual for several reasons. First, it is round, and many of the antique French rugs found in Leleu collections were rectangular. Secondly, this antique french Leleu rug only uses 2 colors. Leleu often used a limited palette in his designs, but they often contained as many as 5 colors. They would often contain different tones of browns, greens, and perhaps an accent color, such as a burgundy or turquoise blue. This antique rug is different in that he only used two colors to represent the complex design.

The design is carried out in silhouette and is raised from the background of the rug so that it has a looked that is reminiscent of a plaster relief. This would have complemented plaster relief work along ceiling moldings and formal mantelpieces of French estates.

The uniqueness of the design and the exquisite use of relief technique gives this round antique French art deco Leleu rug a character that makes it stand out among Art Deco pieces. It would be a treasure for any collection and a wonderful addition to a formal space that needs a piece that can make a bold statement. This is a spectacular antique Art Deco rug by an influential artist who was at the forefront of modern design.
