Mahal Rug, Persia, Early 20th Century – Created in Sultanabad, this elegant Persian rug features a masterfully rendered arabesque with polychromatic vine scrolls, detailed palmettes and flourishing saz leaves embellished with colorful accents, contrasting outlines and carefully shaded details. Masterfully executed, this traditional Sultanabad rug is rendered with an array of cool blue hues paired with cerise and apricot pink accents that complement the bold red field. Detailed yet broad and well defined, this spectacular rug exemplifies the precise geometry of the classic Persian arabesque as well as the Shah Abbasi palmette and many traditional floral motifs. Classic flower and vine scroll guard bands flank the inky blue main borders, which feature an expressive pattern of spiraling vine scrolls and delicate palmettes fortified with cerise and azure accents.
