Antique Gabbeh Rug, Persia, early twentieth century
Vertical rows of zig-zags in apricot, aubergine, blue, and chocolate make up the field of this arresting little antique Gabbeh, set against a soft tan field. The ground area between the two central zig-zags shifts to light cocoa, creating a strong central emphasis that is balanced by the blue zig-zags and triangles at either side. A chocolate edge stripe provides the hint of a border. Though apparently simple in design, there is a remarkable thoughtfulness to this piece that only emerges with extended contemplation.
