Antique Caucasian Rugs -- Antique Karabagh rug, late nineteenth century - Certain antique Karabaghs like this example are famed for their life-like rendering of plants and flowers drawn from the repertory of European decorative arts. Here we see an allover repeating design of leafy soft green bouquets brimming with pink, red, and white roses, all done in realistic style in three dimensional perspective. These are set against a black ground that is dramatic, but not overly so because of the lace-like scatter of finely wrought tiny flowers between the larger bouquets. The overall effect is one of grace and elegance, recalling the style of classic Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets from France.
