Antique Khotan Rug, Origin: East Turkestan, Circa: Turn of the 20th Century – Here is a genuinely beautiful antique rug – an antique Khotan carpet that was woven in East Turkestan around the turn of the twentieth century. This exciting work is characterized both by its lovely, traditional Khotan design as well as the inimitable way that it shows its considerable age. The outer border consists of a series of alternating cloud bands, colored in shades of red, white and gold that have begun to come together in an intriguing way over the years. An inner border with a simple repeating pattern comes next, breaking off the cloud band border from the field. The field itself is captivating: it is colored with the soft gold color that appears throughout the piece, and is decorated simply but traditionally. Corner pieces are featured in the field, both simple and complex. An assortment of traditional symbols appear as detail elements throughout the carpet, with considerable space between them. Dominating the field are three lovely medallions, each different from the last. These beautifully integrate the darker colors of the border into the field, giving the entire carpet a deep sense of unity and balance.
