The blue background is reminiscent of a formal pool that once graced the grand entrance of a palace. Elegant cypress trees extend their spires toward the heavens, as they once did in the ancient gardens that inspired this piece.

Kerman is a city that helped to create the spectacular pieces that graced the palaces and courtyards of Sultans and aristocrats of the Safavid Dynasty. They had a reputation as premier weavers of Persia. In the early 19th century, the city was destroyed during a period of civil strife. The weavers quickly relocated and set up shop in the nearby town of Laver. The artists from these two traditions traded techniques and designs. What would emerge is a style that represents some of the most magnificent rugs in the world.

The unusual size of the rug and the level of care that went into it tells us that this could have been a commissioned piece designed for a specific use or event. Its state of preservation also suggests that it has been kept in conditions that allowed it to remain beautiful over the years. We will never know the details of the story of this rug, but we do know the care that went into making it and keeping it through the many years. It is a rare collectible for the right space.
