Since the Safavid period, from 1501 to 1722 A.D., the city of Tabriz has been a well-known and respected production place for the ultimate desirable Persian carpets. Historical records reveal that rugs were made in the city during the Sassanid period, from 224 to 651 A.D.

Tabriz is located in the northwestern regions of Iran. As the capital city of East Azerbaijan province, this metropolis stands 449 feet above sea level within a basin of the Sahand Mountains. To the north are Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Classic Tabriz rug designs display a centrally placed medallion enhanced by an all-over covering of floral patterns, vines, tendrils and foliage. Following the ending of the Safavid Dynasty, the extensive carpet-weaving artistry decreased in its quality and impact across Persia. However, interest in rug and carpet production revived during the nineteenth century. During this period, three Persian master-weavers, Haji Jalili, Sheik Safi and Kurban Dai, greatly influenced Tabriz’s carpet artistry revival. This era witnessed the return of Tabriz as a major center of exquisite carpet design and production.
