Germany has long been one of Europe’s most important markets for exceptional antique Oriental rugs. German design culture values craftsmanship, precision, and the lasting presence of well-made objects in the home.
The Nazmiyal Collection has served German collectors, interior designers, and private buyers for years. Rugs are shipped from our New York gallery with full international documentation, insurance, and a 72-hour in-home approval policy.
Many pieces most sought after by German buyers are well represented in Nazmiyal’s collection of vintage, and modern rugs. This includes elegant Persian Tabriz and Kashan rugs, architectural Heriz carpets, decorative Oushaks, and select Scandinavian and modern designs.
Barron’s: “Nazmiyal has been trading since 1980 and holds one of the world’s largest collections of antique rugs, with more than 3,000 [now 4,000] pieces.”
Germany’s Historic Connection to the Rug Trade
Historically, Germany was a heavy-hitting importer of Persian, Turkish, and other Eastern-made rugs. Germany’s second largest city, Hamburg, sits alongside the Elbe estuary, a river that crosses the whole country into the Czech Republic. The city’s proximity to the river made it a prime trading port, especially since Hamburg is the only major city near the North Sea. The rug and textile business was an important pillar in the city’s local economy, as traded rugs were often fine productions made to furnish the homes of affluent nobles.
Germany’s historic connection to the Oriental rug trade goes further than just physical commerce, though. The German painter Hans Holbein was one of many Renaissance painters who utilized Oriental rugs as an artistic device in his work. “Holbein Carpets,” as they’re sometimes known today, are a type of Ottoman carpet depicted in the backgrounds of paintings of wealthy European families.

What German Buyers Are Looking For
Germany has long been part of the broader European market for antique Oriental rugs. Collecting traditions, decorative arts, and strong appreciation for the craft have shaped the German appetite for traditional weavings. Over time, Persian and Turkish carpets found a natural place in German interiors. Their structure, materials, and historical character appealed to buyers who valued quality and permanence. That appreciation continues today across very different interiors, from historic residences to minimalist, contemporary spaces.
Rug trends worldwide are shifting away from stark minimalism and toward a more collected and cultured curation. German customers value authenticity, quality, sustainability, and skilled craftsmanship. The antique and vintage pieces in our collection are all one-of-a-kind productions, each with deep historic and cultural significance. We also offer hand-knotted modern rugs for contemporary stylings, made with natural fibers and dyes.
Here at Nazmiyal, we appreciate the level of skill that goes into the creation of a rug. We are committed to representing authentic craftsmanship and the preservation of this ancient practice. Visit our area rug services page for more information and resources.

VAT, duties, and “landed cost” expectations
German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer), any applicable customs duties, and carrier clearance fees are set by German Customs (Zoll) and the EU customs framework, collected by the carrier or customs broker before or at delivery. These government charges are separate from the rug price and shipping charges unless explicitly stated on your invoice.
For orders shipped from outside the EU, German import VAT is commonly 19% for many goods, and customs duties may apply depending on how the item is classified. We ship fully insured and provide standard export documentation for customs clearance. If you would like an estimate before purchase, we can provide the information your broker or carrier needs to quote expected VAT and duties for your specific item.
