Finely Woven Oversize Mahi Fish Design Antique Khorassan Persian Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – White, curling accents among orange flowers on a black background create a repeating pattern over the central field of this antique Persian rug. Diminutive flowers and mahi fish designs, their forms linked by stylized stems working outward. A wide set of numerous borders, comprising almost half the width of the antique Khorassan rug, surrounds the central area. The innermost bands, which are thin and filled with tremulous, winding line-work, offset the curving shapes of the middle with their straight black edges. The thin edging leads to thicker, more ornate bands before descending to narrow bars again around the antique rug. The widest, central border is light-toned with a tan background, contrasted by sharply defined black lines bearing flowers.
